Why we have to continue trying with video game movies
Video game films usually have a bad reputation, usually because they are usually bad. But as I always say, The first step to be good in something is to be zero . There are cinematographic adaptations of all kinds of things; Novels, legends and myths, comics, or even events of real life. All are not good. The first adaptations are rather bad, but by testing and errors and refining a trade, Hollywood has managed to produce very good movies. One day, they may be able to do it with video games.
At the end of the month, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will begin in the rooms. We also anticipate the exit of the Uncharted movie with Tom Holland. Although these films aim to be the beginning of a series, they carry in them the legacy of all the other previous video game films, for the most part.
These films deserve to be judged on their own merits, not on the reputation of those who preceded them, is not it? Do we judge the next film of Captain America on that of 1979 with the motorcycle helmet? These first animated movies of the Lord of the Rings were pretty awful, but they do not remove the films of Peter Jackson.
Successful cinematographic adaptations such as those found in the MCU, the Middle Earth series and all other cinematographic franchises (original works or not) have something in common. They have people who work there who really care about them. I believe that a studio that attacks a video game movie must have someone like Kevin Feige; Someone excited about the source material that will take the time to understand what makes it special and how to translate it on the screen.
Money turns the world. Unhappy, but a simple fact of life. The goal of making a movie is often to make money. People need to eat, pay rent, pay their yacht, etc. Will it bring money back? is the motor question in all Hollywood decisions. The passion for source material is not. Once again, these studios need a special person to find this balance between making money and please fans to make video game movies a profitable business.
But how can a movie transform a 20-hour game into a 2-hour film? Well, how does a movie adapt a 700 book book? How can we take a cartoon bow of 10 numbers and make it a movie? How to take the career of Freddie Mercury and make a movie? That s all the challenge of an adaptation. Yes, it s going to be hard. You may need to cut some characters. You may need to modify some of the intrigue elements to adapt them to the format of a movie. This may not be exactly the game you played.
Are long and rich video games in stories better adapted to be television broadcasts? Sure. The Last of Us, The Witcher and Showtime Halo Series receive this treatment and I hope it will work for them. Decide what would make a good series and what would make a good movie is another challenge that the industry should take up.
Yes, Hollywood is bad enough to find the important parts of a game and put them on the screen, but the cinephiles must also understand that they do not look at a video game. What I m saying is that I have a choice to do with players who think about what will make a good movie. The simple fact of launching an actor who looks like Leon Kennedy will not make the Movie Resident Evil better. Divide the story of a game into three parts will not bring spectators in a theater.
All the interests of all this is that if we intimidate the filmmakers to make full video game movies, we will never see a good one. A bit like a parent for a child who is bad, we have to feed them and guide them in the right direction. Unfortunately, the average viewer like you or I can not do much to change or solve the problems above. We just have to hang on to them and hope that Hollywood will succeed one day.
