The Ten Top 2019 Games

Ten Top Games of the Year 2019

Each year, editors connected to Cog meet in the Battlebridge Press X to Podcast to discover the top ten games of the year. Or maybe it's better to say, our best games of the year. There is always one or two passionate projects that make the list unexpectedly, and we think it's okay. Hic? We must agree on the list. The rewards based on the COG category are strictly decided by the team's votes, but the ten best games in 2019 are more ... Personal.

2019 was a solid year for games. By browsing my list of notable titles this year, I forgot how amazing the first half of the year. Resident Evil 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3 have both landed in January. Damn it! From there, almost every month had a game in the mix for this list. To find out how we arrived there, you can consult our Goty episode on Spotify, Anchor, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Now, without further delay, on the list.

10 . Stained blood: night ritual

Do not let a tenth place finish you deceive. Bloostained: Ritual of The Night is a good lucky game, and the culmination of so many years of work of Koji Igarashi and his team. Based on the best parts of its Castlevania style, Bloodstained is a love letter to the fans of the previous work of IGA. Heck, even the title reflects the classic symphony of the PS1 of the night. For a while, it seemed like this game could never go out. But he did it, and it offers an experience that recalls these simpler times. Design and mechanics are deliberately straight out of the 90s, but have so finely and precisely refined their feeling that they really deserve to be underlined.

9 . Past days

Remember the aforementioned passion projects? Days Gone is part of it. From the point of view of a bird, it does not matter special. It is an open world filled with benchmarks and goals, with a radical story that is probably too long. And yet, he finds his house here at number 9. MIGHTY No. 9? No, no, that's something else.

Days Gone is not far from perfect, but some people have seen something more than standard mechanics removed from the open world starter kit. Sam Witwer is outstanding as a deacon, offering a sincere performance of the history more or less anywhere everywhere, and the game has proud look even if performance can be unstable. The thing that pushed Days Gone in the top 10 was without a doubt the Freak hordes.

The tension of rushing to escape a horde is of first order, and put the perfect trap to eliminate hundreds of zombies is incredibly satisfactory. Everyone does not like this game, but Days Gone is worth a reading, and we are convinced that the inevitable sequence of Bend Studio on PS5 will impress you.

8 . Fire Emblem: Three houses

It's always exciting to see a well-known franchise move on to a new platform. Three houses made the jump successfully, pulling all conventional strategy maneuvers and the relational drama that you can handle on the Nintendo Switch.

The tour-turn strategy is better than ever, keeping the permadeath that makes the battles of Fire Emblem so exciting, but adding some mulligans to make things more accessible for the modern player. As we said in our review, it is the choice that counts: The beloved acolytes are starting to hang out in my wake, becoming luggage that I can not carry. In the last section, I am totally ruthless. These are the wages of the war. What matters is that you have this choice, something I recognize as essential for different types of players. »

Outside the battle, well, that's where things really increase for many people. Although it is missing the option of daring your colleagues - it would be weird when they are students and you are their instructor - the teas and the monastery of the three houses are a dark and deep rabbit hole in which we liked to fall during Hundreds of hours. If you like the strategy and personal stories among the consequences of the end of the world, Fire Emblem: Three Houses should absolutely be shame at 2020.

7 . Sekiro: the shadows die twice

In many ways, Sekiro was a risky project for Software. (Insert a descriptor) Dark Souls is a sentence that blesses about half of the game critics these days, so play with this formula had to be a little terrifying. Does the famous activity that controlled them would let them make its own path? They did it, and the resulting game is absolutely great.

In our journal, we proclaimed the colorful world of Ashina is far from the Gothic and dark nature of the previous from fromSoftware, and welcome to that. What I admire the most in the world of Sekiro is the beauty of the beauty juxtaposed with a bloody carnage and brutal enemies. The aspect alone is enough for a new plug, but the way it is designed to embrace the mechanical crossing of the game makes my favorite world of the studio so far.

Perhaps the most interesting, Sekiro tells a simple but engaging story, and that alone was enough to bring back the souls of us into the melee. What retained us is the quick, brutal and precise combat, which is deeper from several tens of meters that it seems on the surface. It's not for sensitive souls thanks to absolutely brutal boss meetings, but Sekiro is one of the top ten games of 2019 and deserves a place on this list.
